Hello, I am in the middle of purchasing a new home and our building inspection stated the following work would need to be done in order to correct the uneven flooring. 20/. The floors slope towards the center ( appears to be due to the previous and current deterioration, in the basement, of the bottom of compression posts that are supporting the main carrying beam for the floor system that are showing signs of rust or rot and the posts should be installed higher off of the basement floor ). Installing steel adjustable jack posts on stable foundations and straightening the carrying beam is recommended ( steel adjustable jack posts are recommended but 6"x6" pressure treated lumber should last a long time before needing replacing ). To properly straighten the floors the floor joists at the end of the main carrying beams need to be levelled by lifting the main carrying beam below those floor joists. When the end floor joists are levelled and sitting on a main carrying beam a block of 2"x4" can be placed under the main carrying beam fastened with the fastener head sticking out so a string can be tied to the fastener head. Installing another block of 2"x4" at the opposite end of a main carrying beam and pulling the string tight from the other block of 2"x4" and securing the string to hold tight. Installing compression posts, sitting on solid concrete blocks, under the main carrying beam to make the measurement consistently the same ( 1 ½" when using standard 2"x4"s ) between the bottom of the main carrying beam and the string as needed, will straighten the: main floor, second floor, and ceilings.
